**Volunteers should bring their own sack lunch to this event**
Join us as we put in a helping hand weeding, raking leaves, cleaning and painting at Mary House of Hospitality, a rural farmhouse which hosts low-income women and children traveling to visit family members in the Federal Correctional Institution in Oxford, WI. Many families must travel long distances from throughout the United States to visit the prison, and it's rural location makes it inaccessible by public transportation. Mary House provides these families with shelter, meals, and transportation during their weekend stay, in the belief that children suffer enough during the incarceration of a parent without having to endure a lack of shelter, safety or comfort during traveling.

What is Local Quest?
Every year, The Crossing participates in a number of local service-learning projects intended as a way for students to engage with and serve the Madison-area community. These projects are initiated by students and friends of The Crossing, and explore issues ranging from environmental protection, to homelessness, to senior loneliness around the holidays. Groups are open to all students, and are a great way to meet new friends while doing meaningful work.
We frame these "Local Quests" just as we do our longer domestic and international trips; we learn and grow with short opening gatherings putting our Quest's theme in context, and end with a group debrief to process what we've learned and experienced during the day. Our aim is to have students come away from their day volunteering with a deeper understanding of what their work means in Madison, and how to integrate their experience into their life both as a college student and beyond.
